Boris Karloff Tales of Mystery returns from the grave after nearly 30 years!

Unavailable for three decades, this long gone, but not forgotten Gold Key series, bearing the namesake of one of the earliest and most recognizable faces of horror, Boris Karloff Tales of Mystery will be collected to excite readers of all ages.

For nearly twenty years the comic book series Boris Karloff Tales of Mystery wove stories of intrigue, suspense, and macabre drama. Hosted by the master of suspense, himself, the comic featured contributions from some of comics history's most well-known creators: Alex Toth, Joe Orlando (EC artist and editor), Mike Sekowsky ( Justice League artist), Frank Thorne, José-Luis García-Lopez, Arnold Drake, Len Wein (creator of Swamp Thing and Wolverine ), Al Williamson, Jerry Robinson (creator of The Joker ), Dan Spiegle, and many others.

A circus performer terrorized by mysterious powers from beyond . . . a jade idol of a monkey that carries a curse on a south pacific island drives a man to the brink of madness . . . an art gallery haunted by paintings that come to life at night . . . . a dictator that sees enemies around every corner, but who can't see the threat right before his eyes . . .

These are just a few of the chilling tales awaiting readers in the first volume…

With a new introduction by Boris Karloff's daughter Sara Karloff, this collection brings together four long-unavailable comics in a handsome hardcover Archival format—the first two issues of Boris Karloff Thriller , as well as the first two issues of the series that would continue shocking and amusing audiences for almost one hundred issues, Boris Karloff Tales of Mystery .

The newest addition to the Dark Horse Archives program, and following on the heels of the return of the legendary Creepy and Eerie , the first hardcover collection is slated for release in 2009. Dark Horse has plans to collect all 97 of these highly sought after issues into four beautifully bound hardcover volumes.

Nashville Horror Host Dr. Gangrene Begins Tenth Year On Air

Dr. Gangrene’s Creature Feature Is Back In Action

Nashville, TN (09.01.08) Nashville Horror Host Dr. Gangrene will celebrate ten years on the air with the new season of Creature Feature that begins airing Saturday September 6, 2008 on WNAB CW58 Nashville.

A staple of local programming in Nashville, TN, Dr. Gangrene (Larry Underwood) has reinvented his program from a 30 minute public access television show to a two hour network bonanza showcasing classic and not so classic films.

The New season of Dr. Gangrene's Creature Feature has some surprises in store. Movies will now be broadcast with FACT-O-RAMA, a technology that allows interesting factoids about the films to appear on screen during the movie. This running commentary will bring new life to films you may have seen dozens of times before, or add substance for first time viewers.

In true B-movie director William Castle fashion, we are proud to present these films in FACT-O-RAMA, said Dr. Gangrene. Our tenth season promises to be our best yet, with new features, films, and fun. Viewers are in for a real treat, and a few tricks, too

As always, Dr. Gangrene is joined by his lovely assistant Nurse Moan-Eek (Linda Wylie). Together they guide you through the film through comedic and sometimes perilous adventures.

New Valiant Productions Cameron McCasland and Michael Creason have joined the Creature Feature Staff to Direct and Produce episodes alongside creator Larry Underwood. Earlier this year, McCasland & Creason helped develop the "Go Green With Dr. Gangrene" campaign. The Environmentally friendly ads became an immediate hit, with over 80,000 hits on the web including the newly launched www.gogreencrusade.com

In celebration of ten years on the air, Dr. Gangrene was recently invited to throw out the first pitch at a Nashville Sounds baseball game. Dr. Gangrene has also launched new pages on Facebook, as well as Myspace.com/drgangrenecreaturefeature for fans of the hit television show. Several public appearances have been scheduled before years end.

Dr. Gangrenes Creature Feature airs Saturday at 1:00 p.m. beginning September 6th 2008 on WNAB Nashville CW 58. It will continue in that time slot throughout September and October before a brief hiatus before relaunching in 2009 with more new episodes.

Dr. Gangrenes Creature Feature is a production of Shackle Island Productions.. For more information please visit www.drgangrene.com

Horror Movie Elements That Really Scare You

Hello fellow monster fans!
I've put together a short list of "spooky movie cliches" that scared me (a lot) as a kid. See what you think and, of course, feel free to chime in!
1) Sheets over the furniture in an old, creepy house. This looks especially spooky in b&w.

2) Shots of the sun going down. Vampire movies were pretty creepy to me and this particular "spooky movie cliche" frightened me. I knew it wouldn't be long and the undead would rise again!

3) A moaning wind. One of the best examples of this is in 1935's "Mark of the Vampire". Watch it again and listen closely. It really adds atmosphere.

4) Organ or harpsichord music. I think of the organ music in "Brides of Dracula" or the harpsichord music in "Dementia 13". That always creeped me out as a kid (and still does)!

5) Spooky whispers. This can really add chills. "The Return of Count Yorga" has a great example of this. Plenty spooky!

These are just a few. What "spooky movie cliches" scared you as a kid?
-Brian N.

MIRRORS! Both in movies and real life...mirrors always get me....there's
something about them.

I remember freaking out as a kid on an episode of Green Acres where
Eddie Albert sees an old witch living in his bathroom mirror!

Witch's too, for that matter.

I think it was being read Hanzel and Gretal as a kid.

We had a barometer in our kitchen that had a witch and, I think a
small child. If it was going to rain the little plastic witch would
come out of this plastic shack (it was kind like a coo-coo clock).
Anyone know what I'm rambling about.

Well, the Witch is THE WIZARD OF OZ (1939) and her devilish flying
monkeys scared m as a kid. Also, one ofthe cariest things I've eer
seen on TV, is the NIGHT GALLERY episode called "Since Aunt Ada Came To
Stay." She's a creepy witch....whoah...it's REALLY scary.

-Ron

I know exactly what you mean, Ron. Is this anything like it?

http://wyomingbreezes.blogspot.com/2008/06/witch-is-out-today.html

-Charles H.

That's it Charles....just my parents had one where the figures were all off-white/cream colored. And the Witch was nasty looking.....I'd see her at the breakfast table before school..... -Ron

Regarding "Since Aunt Ada Came To Stay" on Night Gallery....They just showed that episode a few nights ago on RTN. She was scary! Pointy teeth! It reminded me of the infamous doll in "Trilogy of Terror". Now that, the end of that, scared me as a kid. Karen Black with pointy teeth and a knife.

*shudder*

Jane

Any background music, or sound, using a Theremin.
A very old cemetery late at night. (Add some fog, and I'm under the covers.)
Unseen supernatural forces that you know are very close by. They may be seen
indirectly, you may hear them, you may even think that someone, or something,
has just touched you in the dark.
Out of gas on a lonely unknown road at twilight, out in the distance you
see an old dark decaying mansion and... "Hey look, I think I see a light in one of the windows." -Count Gregula

The biggest thing that used to scare me is when someone is unaware a pair of
hands are
reaching for them from behind, and then the person moves away just as the hands
are
about to grab them. That was beyond suspenseful for me, and when I think about
it, now
those scenes usually make me laugh. Nervous laughter, I'll grant you, but
laughter
nonetheless.
Scott

In a word - skeletons. I could handle vampires, werewolves and
monsters of any shape and size. But the minute one of those
skeletons appeared on our TV screen, I'd have to hide my head under
a blanket until it went away. Every damn time.

I have a fragmentary memory of seeing a ghostly image with a
skeleton-like head on a TV show. (It may have been an episode of
Thriller, but I was far too young to rememeber any plot specifics.)
That image became one of the primal fears of my childhood. For
years, I would see that image emerging from the cellar of our home
in the middle of the night. Yikes!

You'll have to excise me now. I need to go find my blanket.

Steven

The one cliche that still scare me is the one where the menacing nun
advances on the helpless kid with a big ruler in her hands and... oh,
wait... that might not be a movie scene... Bill D.

For me it was the headless horseman. Werewolves, vampires, zombies ..... etc. no big; but nothing sitting between the shoulders; and I'm outta there.
-Uncle Gomez

1966 Vintage Monster Calendars Are Here

Below are two of the ad pages in the Calendar

These came from a left-over warehouse....we only have a few. The actual calendar, which was small, below the monster faces were clipped (returns from stores). Read the below description and grab one if you want one...they won't last long.

MONSTER CALENDAR - Vintage Don Post 1966
This is the actual 1966 calendar featuring all the great Don Post monster masks. There are also a few pages of other vintage ads. It's on heavy stock calendar paper, top stapled. Pages are all intact. The actual calendar, which was small across the bottom of the pages, has been clipped off. If the calendar hadn't been clipped, these can go for as much as $100. But, the calendar was just a few inches on the bottom, and the cool images are all here on these. A very limited supply from a return warehouse are here. They'll go quick. ($20)

Happy Birthday To Resident Monster Kid

Our resident, in-haunted house Monster Kid, Paisley Adams, turns twelve today. Above she's right at home with two of her favorite people - "The Mad Doctor" (Shane Stone), and Creighton (Kevin Rice) from Ghoul A Go-Go. Photo taken at Blobfest by Barb Heiss.

I just wanted to wish Paisley Adams a very happy 12th birthday. Paisley is the official ambassador of good will for the Monster Bash. She has taken it upon herself to spread the good word with monster kids of the her own age. While we adults can go on and on about the films and shows we love to each other, someone is needed to help with the children of monster kids. Paisley can usually be seen in the halls and lobby of the bash hotel reaching out to any newbies (last year, one of them was Sean's daughter, the girl in the bat costume).
Ron, when you get us our own town of New Vasaria, I'd like to recommend Paisley for head of public relations. : )
-Pat GHOULCHICK Gonzalez

Happy Bday to Paisley! -Andy Fish

Eat a piece of cake for me. - Doc Quatermass

First, Happy Birthday Paisley!

Ron - I remember the card you sent after Paisley was born with Ursula
holding an igunana or some kind of strange creature - it was one of the
most memorable birth announcements I ever got in the mail!
Do you still have a copy of that?
The bash list might enjoy seeing that. - Kev

HA! I remember making that.....I'll have to look around to see if I still have it! -Ron

Sketch By Pete Bregman

At the Monster Mania Convention this past weekend, I had the opportunity to meet Pete Bregman. A top flight artist, writer, monster maniac, and all around great guy. He gave me the above SON OF FRANKENSTEIN sketch (with Ygor up front) and was making sketches like crazy for kids. He was promoting his new collected works book - THE TRAP-DOOR MAKER, a prequel to The Phantom of the Opera (more on this below). This is a guy that has his heart in the right place (plopped there by Henry Frankenstein, no doubt). I see THE TRAP-DOOR MAKER becoming a major motion picture in the future....

TRAP-DOOR MAKER's a Hit

Drop one in your shopping cart and feast your eyes when it hits your doorstep from Creepy Classics. Pete Bregman's story and art are a monster-sized shoe in for a major motion picture buy. The kind of new movie, we'd all love to go see. -Ron

segnment.
Hopefully, we can get an interview

on the Fox lot, when I was about
15, while he was shooting "Land Of The Giants" John Chambers
introduced me.) You and
your "Monster Bash" will be mentioned on the end credits, as without

Monster Home Movie Making Memories

"ROCK's" MONSTER Movie Making Memories, right from The "Glorious" 60s! Yeah, a few blocks away from here, there's a church which, in early 60's, had a "haunted house" like maze inside with one guy wearing an over-the-head rubber Glenn Strange Frankenstein Monster mask! Those were $2.95 back then, in '61-'63 or so, but my Mom & Dad didn't buy me one- but Mom DID buy us boys the cheaper priced .98 cents 2/3 over head rubber monster masks, at Pk. Ridge's former "Walgreens" in Village Green shopping center, where, that same year we got those masks, I also met "The 'WILSON GIANT'", of Wilson Meats!

Anyway, in that very same outdoor mall, I got "zombie" mask, at "Walgreen's" (now a dental office), which I wore in Don Stillwaugh's 1st Super-8mm monster movie- we each got about 20 seconds screen time, wearing our masks, as Don's Dad, Don Stillwaugh, Sr., filmed us with his Super-8mm movie camera! I came out of a small "ditch" in Don's lot, next to their house, pretending I was coming out of a grave (wearing my Zombie mask), with my arms folded across my chest, like The Mummy! My bro., Phil had the 2/3 over head, .98 cents "Devil" mask, that was waaayy too big for his small head! -"Hehh"! Don had the "Cyclops" mask- & he picked up a big, heavy branch & threw it, in his scene! That was in October of 1964, a month before my 8th BIG birthday (I was a "skinny" kid then), when we were 7 year's "Young" (Phil was "5", then)!

WE all had a "Monster Club" after I told Don: "I know! Let's start a 'MONSTER' Club"! They said, "Yeeaahhh!!! Well, see ya!

Photo ID?

Hi Ron! Could you identify this still for me? Hmmmm? Thanks!---Ted

Hi Ted, Hmmmm, indeed. It's obvious that the sculps are mock-up designs for Universals THIS ISLAND EARTH, THE MOLE PEOPLE, and THE LAND UNKNOWN....I know you know that. But I noticed the Universal copyright date, in the border not pictured above, was 1956. That would put it between THE MOLE PEOPLE and THE LAND UNKNOWN. It was a publicity still sent to theatres by the code number. MY GUESS is that it was just some kid from a Universal staffer and the publicity department thought it would be good to include in publicity stills to promote THE LAND UNKNOWN. But, I'm not 100% sure, of course. Could it be a still from another film that the sculptures appeared in with this kid...I don't know. I would suspect my first guess though. Very cool still that I've never seen before. It says it all....kids love dinosaurs and monsters. Any other comments from folks? -Ron

Hi. Thanks.
Nothing yet. I sent it to Tom Weaver, Ron Adams and Ron Borst.
Tom doesn't know.
I had a description of the still at one point and lost it. The kid was
someone's son...Kevan, Westmore...I don't remember. Ahhhh...age!---Ted

I got the answer! Ron Borst was the one that first told me many years
ago...I forgot!
The kid is Tim Hovey. (his first film was The Private War of Major
Benson with Heston and Julia Adams..1955) In 1956 he was shooting a
film called Toy Tiger at Universal. They were doing publicity and
thought how cool to have the kid around some monsters! There you have
it.
The Holy Grail of stills solved!---Ted

The Toy Tiger (1956) is a favorite of mine. Great cast with Jeff
Chandler, Laraine Day, Richard Haydn, Cecil Kellaway, and David
Janssen. AMC use to show it when they were a decent station. They also
use to show The Private War of Major Benson (1955) which is another
favorite. Every now and then TCM shows Slim Carter (1957) with Hovey
and Jock Mahoney and Everything But the Truth (1956) with Maureen
O'Hara and John Forsythe. I keep meaning to write TCM and suggest they
devote a day to Tim Hovey's films.

Sadly he died September 9th, 1989, at age 44 from a drug overdose.

IMDb Trivia

Served as road manager for the Grateful Dead during the late 1970s and
early 1980s.

Don't Look In the DARK SHADOWS

Now in stock, the DARK SHADOWS collection CD with various music selecions from the original soundtrack of the 1960s TV show. Plus, the disc also includes a vintage special greeting to the "Dark Shadows Fan Club." And collected radio spots for the show ar also on this special CD. Get yours now from our CD Department here at Creepy Classics. Remember coming home after school and this supernatural soap opera was on? I can still hear the opening theme coming from my parents black and white Zenith TV (with the rabbit ears)...hauntings from pop culture past. Do you remember Dark Shadows? -Ron

Yes I remember Dark Shadows very well. Growing up in the 60s early 70s I used to rush home from school to watch it on tv just like everybody else used too. Also i do collect some Dark Shadows stuff too. I have one of the dolls of Barnabas Collins plus some of the old comic books that came out back in the 60s when the soap opera was on tv.

Do I remember DARK SHADOWS? It's merely my favorite TV show. DS had it all, covered a lot of spooky ground, and did it well: one of the greatest combinations of cast, crew and writers in horror fiction.
I hope you'll carry the feature films when they come out. I was thrilled to learn that they were shot in Tarrytown, NY, home of Washington Irving, author of many of my favorite ghost stories. I look for the movies to be released on DVD when the Johnny Depp 'Dark Shadows' movie hits the theaters.
Stay Creepy!!

Hi Paul, when the films (HOUSE OF DARK SHADOWS and NIGHT OF DARK SHADOWS) finally make DVD...we'll have them right here at Creepy Classics. You bet! -Ron

One thing that impressed me as a kid watching Dark Shadows (and I remember that if I ran from the bus stop I’d get in the door just in time to see those waves breaking on the shore with the theme song) was that had a up to date cool 1960’s look. Somehow it was gothic and “mod” at the same time, what was it? The hairstyles/ the clothes? But somehow I got the impression that this was cool and hip and adults probably wouldn’t really “get it” which of course made it all the more fun to watch!

Hi Ron!
Back in 1991 Jonathan Frid appeared at a Sci-fi convention in Boston and I had the honor of getting to speak with him for a few moments while he signed my copy of Kathryn Leigh Scott’s most recent Shadows related book. However, when I asked him about the show, he got visibly annoyed and asked me if I had even bothered to see his presentation (he performed a Stephen King story). I said of course I had and, well, that was that!
I read he never enjoyed the fame that came with the role of Barnabas, but when meeting fans, one would think he’d shelve the 'tude for just one day, right?
Thanks!!
Paul Tait

Hi Paul,

Although I have never experienced this "bad attitude" towards DARK SHADOWS from Jonathan Frid (I've never et him), I have heard similar stories to your many times through the years. -Ron

Jim Clatternaugh and Marion from Monsters From the Vault stopped by....plus, great folks like Sal S., Paul from Baltimore, Norm F., Lance, and all! Thanks so much to everyone.....we'll be on the road again in October for Cinema Wasteland in Strongsville, Ohio, GhoulardiFest also in Ohio, and Chiller Theatre (the mother of all monster expos!) in Parsipany, New Jersey. A special thanks for all the help behind-the-scenes at Creepy Classics - Tom "Daddy-O" Adams, Bob Pellegrino, Michael, John, and Tony (the New Jersey Tiger). Photos coming soon.
